Session 1 - Before the Trails: the stories of native American migration into and through North America from Paleo period to Historic Period; and the explorations of the Euro-Americans as they arrive and move into tribal lands. Seven historic characters are introduced who will share in the journeys to the Southwest: 3 native Americans and one Euro-American soldier traveling the Trail of Tears and three Euro-Americans traveling the Santa Fe Trail. The concept of Manifest Destiny and and its impact on the nation is introduced. (24MB)

Session 2 - Trail of Tears - Beginnings: The Five Tribes of the southeast become 'civilized' by Euro-American culture, but these changes do not keep their lands inviolate from settler migration. The influence that the 'factory system' and early wars in the United States have on the Five Tribes loss of their homelands. (74MB)

Session 3 – Santa Fe Trail – Beginnings: Overview of the Santa Fe and the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trails, how the two were linked and how the two were part of a worldwide trade system in the 1500-1800’s. Explore Spain’s motivation for territorial expansion resulting in Spanish arrival & conquest of Mexico & Central America which led to Santa Fe becoming a trading hub. Review how missionaries were critical to helping indigenous tribes transition into a new colonial system via trade & technology training and how religious involvement was also detrimental to their indigenous history. Lastly, Mexico gained its independence in 1821 and trading with US began. (129MB)

Session 4 - Trail of Tears Endings: The Five Tribes are forcibly removed from their southeast homelands to new reservations in 'Indian Country'. We determine where the new lands are and study the characteristics -- rivers, rainfall, elevations, forest cover -- of the old and new lands, comparing them for their potential to support successful farming and hunting. We examine the removal process and the travel routes of each of the five tribes. We discover what accommodations are made for their arrival and to protect them from the hostile tribes already in the territory. (69MB)

Session 5 - Santa Fe Trail Endings: Comparison of our route to the actual route of the Santa Fe Trail shows how close our trip followed the Trail. We then review some geography of the Trail, namely, the changes in elevation, average rainfall, and eco-region changes along the Trail; all of which show how dangerous the Cimarron Desert is! We review what type of wagons were used on the trail and who were some key early Trail blazers. We then headout westward along the trail and identify special people, places and/or events at 15 places along the trail from Franklin all the way to Santa Fe. All of this intended to give the viewer a "feel" of what it was like on the Trail. (122MB)

Session 6 - After the Trails: The Trail of Tears and the Santa Fe Trail come to an end as the nation moves into the 20th century. The Five Tribes have moved from their homelands in the southeast to their new lands in Indian Territory. The Santa Fe merchants and military have seen the evolution of the lands of the southwest moved from a colony of Spain to a part of Mexico to our 47th state. Our tale concludes with stories of the outcomes for the people we've followed along the trails and the development of the two states that are at the ends of the trails -- Oklahoma and New Mexico.
