Session 1: Setting the stage-Before 1600: We summarize the history of France and the Canadian Maritime Provinces from 1000 AD to the end of the 16th century. How will the French people be impacted by world events to leave France to explore and settle the new world? How will the First Nations people be impacted by those European explorers and settlers who invade their homelands? (33MB)

Session 2 - French Migration to Acadia-1600 to 1717: What is “New France” and “Acadie” and where are they? Highlights of Key Players in the creation/destruction of Acadie. A brief review of geopolitical tensions of the time giving context to the Acadian story. Review of the stresses and strains on the Acadians as world powers, England & France, try to build their respective empires. How the Acadians respond to those turbulent times and develop into a tight-knit, distinct people with common values, beliefs, and aims. Will they survive? (58.2MB)a (MB)

Session 3 - Le Grande Dérangement-1717 to 1756: Review the evolving culture of the Acadians; what pressures they have to endure and how that changes them from a pure French culture to their own distinct culture. Review the importance of Acadians as a cog in the wheel of early Nova Scotia and how that changes. Also review the back and forth changes of the leadership of Acadia; 29 governor changes, 10 ruling country changes and 4 instances of 2 governors at the same time. Examine “secondary soldiers” (1st Nations People, Acadian Militia, & Guerrilla Fighters) and the roles they play in the evolution of Acadia. Analyzed the major battles in Acadia to garnish the big picture of why they occur. Continue a review of Acadian (Nova Scotia) history from 1717 through 1755 and what led to the Grand Derangement and how it was carried out. Where will the Acadians go?(52MB)

Session 4 - The Acadian Diaspora-1756 to 1800: The amazing paths that Acadians travel after they are deported or flee from Acadie in 1755. For the next 60 years, Acadians search for a place to settle. Thousands of Acadians are deported to England and the British Colonies in North America. Within a few years, they are relocating to France, Saint Domingue, Martinique, Guadalupe, French Guiana, and the Falkland Islands in their search of family, community and a new homeland. Finally most find their way to British Canada and Spanish Louisiana to make permanent homes in the Canadian Maritimes and south Louisiana. (86.3MB)

Session 5 - Acadians of Canada & Louisiana-1800 to 1950: The Acadians, exiled from Nova Scotia and led by Joseph Broussard arrive in Louisiana in 1765 to start Acadian settlements there. Louisiana is Spanish controlled but French run at that time. Subsequent to the initial arrival, Louisiana 1st Spanish governor is brought in, then a new Spanish governor is emplaced each of the next 3 years - multiple governors and multiple country ownership issues all over again. Learn where they settle and why and how settlement pattern is important to the Acadians. Learn what the Atchafalaya Basin is, how it is linked to the Mississippi River and about historic settlements in the Basin. Explore Cajun culture; how, once again, their culture and language was destined to be eradicated. However, their survival and resurgence is initiated by events in WWII and later by CODIFIL. And lastly, we talk about Mardi Gras: New Orleans “Carnival” and Cajun “Courir de Mardi Gras”. This class involves 6 video segments. Session 6 - Acadians Today-1950 to Today: In the final session about the French people who originally settled in the area known today as Nova Scotia, we learn about the fate of these Acadians after they return from the diaspora from Acadie to new homelands in Atlantic Canada and south Louisiana. We look at their worlds today -- the areas in which they live, the occupations they follow, the struggles they endure, the adaptations they make, and successes they achieve. We also examine the aboriginal people who were in these lands before Europeans arrive and what has happened to these tribes as their cultures survive and thrive in parallel with the Acadians. a(145MB) (MB
